In Loving Memory of Diane Elaine Baxter

June 18, 1948 – January 7, 2025

It is with profound sadness that Friends of Moses Hall, Inc. and The Board of Trustees of Morningstar Tabernacle Number 88, Incorporated, announce the passing of our beloved president and descendant, Diane E. Baxter, on January 7, 2025.

Diane’s lifelong passion for genealogy led to her September 2017 discovery of the historic Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Moses Cemetery and Hall site in Cabin John, after a decade-long search for the graves of her great-grandparents, James and Annie Coates. Little did she know that this fateful visit would mark the beginning of a seven-year journey as she fought tirelessly to protect her ancestors’ final resting place from the planned expansion of the Capital Beltway (I-495).

Diane’s unwavering commitment, thoughtful leadership, and relentless advocacy were instrumental in bringing national attention to the urgent need to preserve this sacred site. Her warmth, kindness, and generosity breathed life into her family’s history, captivating and inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing her. She exemplified the power of descendants stepping forward to safeguard their cultural heritage, leaving an indelible mark on our community and beyond.

As we mourn Diane’s passing, we find solace in the cherished memories we shared and the lasting impact of her work. Her dedication, courage, and spirit will continue to guide us as we remain steadfast in our mission to protect and honor historic Morningstar Moses Cemetery.

Diane’s legacy shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us that the past is worth fighting for, and the future is shaped by those who remember.

Rest in power, Diane. Your light will never fade.
