Preserving a Hidden Chapter of Maryland History

Friends of Moses Hall, Inc. is a descendant-centered nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the historic Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Cemetery and Hall in Cabin John, Maryland.

Founded in the late 19th century by the local Black community, Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 served as a mutual aid society, gathering space, and burial ground — playing a vital role in the spiritual and civic life of its community.

Today, this rare and significant cultural site is at risk. Threatened by highway infrastructure expansion and decades of neglect and erosion, the site is now the focus of ongoing preservation, documentation, and community engagement efforts.

Ground-penetrating radar surveys have identified more than 400 potential burial locations, making clear the importance of long-term stewardship and protection.

Why This Site Matters

Cultural Significance: One of the few known surviving sites in Maryland associated with African American benevolent society lodges founded shortly after the Reconstruction era.

Recognized by National Leaders: In 2021, the site was named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Preservation in Action: Through research, field surveys, documentary storytelling, and collaborative planning, we are working to stabilize the site, improve access, and ensure it remains a lasting part of our region’s shared history.

How You Can Help

With support from individuals, institutions, and public partners, we can:

  • Advance plans for site stabilization and access.

  • Develop interpretive signage and educational tools.

  • Support archival and oral history research.

  • Engage the public through programming and events.

Every contribution brings us closer to preserving this historic site for future generations.

In loving memory of our beloved founding president and descendant, Diane E. Baxter (1948–2025), whose vision and determination inspired the formation of Friends of Moses Hall and the preservation of this sacred site.
